Technology has taken over our world and our minds. Think I’m wrong? Check all that apply to you:

  • You have a TV
  • You own a computer
  • You keep a cellphone
  • You need a calculator to answer simple math
  • You have used “google”, “blog” or “facebook” in a sentence at least once
  • You don’t read books, you read e-books

If you checked one or more, your life is definitely ruled by machines. Truthfully, technology has made our lives efficient and modernized. It has changed how we work, travel and learn. It makes communication with others and renders long division obsolete. However is this really a good thing? Have we really become more efficient than we were thirty years ago, or has our reliance on machines just made us plain lazy and dumb?

Today, I found that TV was making a celebrity named Jessica Simpson so famous, because she was on TV for 6 hours. 6 HOURS!? Isn’t it so weird and unacceptable that only one person who is not important as much as George Bush was on TV for 6 hours in consecutive? Nevertheless, now it is neither weird nor unacceptable for audiences, some even would enjoy watching celebrities or people who are on TV again. For example, the daughter of the president of Hilton Hotel got so famous just because the media liked her and made her be on TV. I think the media, which are supposed to inform us with proper and selective information are not as normal as years before that I’ve never seen her. So, I agree that the media pay too much attention to the personal lives; it can ruin some people’s private lives and it can make less important the people who supposed to be more important than the people who are on TV.

Recently my social studies 11 teacher talked about Canada’s most famous stars in 1920’s. In 1920s, which is after the Great War I, people became relaxed and happy trying to forget about the dark days-war period-and more and more people looked on the entertaining things for themselves such as movies or songs.

As the demand of being joyful with watching movies, the number of actors and actresses increased. In this period, more than hundreds of movie stars were in “Hollywood” and Mary Pickford was one of them. Mary Pickford, who was apparent Canadian female, became so popular over the world with her nickname-the world’s sweetheart. Her career was very successful and some movies that she was on such as Her First Biscuits became so famous.

As you get into higher grades, many of your friends will start working, get their own money and buy things you’d never be able to afford with your pocket money. Do you feel jealous? Did you start to have an urge to work as soon as you can? You already wrote the list of things you are going to buy after you start working? Yes, working while in school is very popular and it’s what many students do.

About 80% of my friends are working as part-time in various places. However, some people seem to think that working while in high school is not beneficial for the students. Do YOU agree? It’s not a simple, one-answer question. There are pros and cons of working while studying and here are some examples:

After a forty-seven and a half minute flight to Prince George, I walked out of the arrival gate clutching my UNBC brochure expectantly. I glanced around the airport and realized I was standing at the only arrival gate, only meters away from the solitary departure gate. We got our hands on a map with specific instructions to UNBC, which was all the way across town. I settled into our rented Kia Sedan and prepared for a long ride. However, ‘across town’ doesn’t quite have the same connotations in Prince George as it does in Vancouver; the ride took fifteen minutes total.
